AI-native roles

Hire Forward Deployed Engineers

Engineers who sit with your customer, understand the messy reality, and ship the integration that makes your product actually work for them.

A Forward Deployed Engineer embeds directly with a customer to turn ambiguous requirements into working software. They combine strong engineering with client-facing judgement, shortening enterprise time to value. Hire one when deals stall in implementation rather than in sales. Expect $95 to $175 per hour.

What this role actually does

A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, works at the boundary between your product and a specific customer's reality. They spend time inside the customer's environment, learn how the data actually looks rather than how the documentation says it looks, and build the connective software that makes your product deliver value in that context.

The role became well known through Palantir and has since spread across enterprise AI and data companies, because the same failure mode keeps recurring: the product genuinely works, the demo is convincing, and then implementation stalls for four months against undocumented systems and internal politics. An FDE is the answer to that specific failure — not a solutions architect who writes diagrams, and not a support engineer who closes tickets, but an engineer who writes production code on the customer's side of the boundary.

Core skills to look for

  • Strong general-purpose engineering, usually Python and TypeScript, plus fluent SQL
  • Data modelling against systems that were never designed to be integrated with
  • API and integration design, including auth, pagination, rate limits and retries
  • Requirements archaeology: extracting the real constraint from conflicting stakeholders
  • Written communication that a non-technical executive can act on
  • Comfort with ambiguity and with being the only engineer in the room
  • Instinct for what to hard-code now and what to generalise into the product later

When you need to hire this role

  • Enterprise deals close but implementation drags on for months
  • Every customer needs 'just one small change' and your roadmap is being eaten alive
  • Your product team has no reliable signal about what customers actually struggle with
  • You are selling an AI product where the value depends entirely on the customer's data
  • You need a beachhead engineer for a strategic account nobody wants to lose

How to assess candidates for this role

  1. Test requirements archaeology

Describe a customer situation with three stakeholders who want contradictory things. A strong FDE asks clarifying questions and proposes a decision path; a weak one starts designing immediately.

  2. Look for shipped integrations, not architecture diagrams

Ask for a specific integration they built end to end, including what broke in production. Vague 'I led the technical engagement' answers usually mean somebody else wrote the code.

  3. Assess the generalisation instinct

Ask when they would push a customer-specific hack back into the core product. Good FDEs have a clear, defensible heuristic; weak ones either never generalise or always do.

  4. Check written communication directly

Ask for a written status update to a customer executive about a slipping deadline. This is a large part of the job and it is easy to test honestly.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer embeds with a specific customer, learns their actual systems and constraints, and writes production software that makes your product deliver value in that environment. The role sits between product engineering and customer success, and it is a coding role, not an advisory one.

How is an FDE different from a solutions architect?

A solutions architect designs and advises; an FDE writes and ships the code. Architects produce diagrams and integration plans, FDEs produce merged pull requests on both sides of the boundary. Many companies hire an architect when the actual blocker is implementation capacity.

When should we hire our first FDE?

Usually when enterprise deals start closing but implementations run long, or when your roadmap is being consumed by one-off customer requests. That is the point at which a dedicated engineer at the customer boundary pays for itself very quickly.

What does a Forward Deployed Engineer cost?

Vetted FDE contract rates typically run $95 to $125 per hour at mid-level, $125 to $155 at senior, and $155 to $175 for staff and principal. The premium over a comparable backend engineer reflects the client-facing judgement the role requires.

Can an FDE work remotely?

Mostly yes, though the role benefits from periodic on-site time with the customer, especially early in an engagement. Strong time-zone overlap with the customer matters far more for this role than for typical backend work.
